The truck cartel

The cartel

The truck cartel case, judged by the European Commission on 19 July 2016, condemned the manufacturers Volvo, Renault, DAF, Iveco, MAN and Daimler for illegal collusion, thus opening the possibility of compensation for all companies that purchased trucks between 1997 and 2011. This investigation, initiated by a denunciation by MAN in 2011, lasted five years and resulted in fines totaling 3 billion euros, reduced in exchange for their cooperation.

Scania, also implicated, contested its participation, but a subsequent decision by the Commission in 2017 confirmed its guilt, although it was the subject of an appeal.

This cartel operated throughout Europe between 1997 and 2011, fixing wholesale prices, delaying the adoption of new EURO emission technologies and agreeing on the sharing of associated costs.

The fault of the manufacturers having been established, it is up to the victims to prove their damage. Private and public companies that acquired trucks of more than 6 tonnes between 1997 and 2011 are concerned.

In February 2024, the last manufacturer to initiate legal proceedings, SCANIA, was definitively convicted by the Court of Justice of the European Union. The limitation period only began to run against it from this date. As the perpetrators of the cartel are jointly and severally liable, it is still possible to claim compensation for all vehicles purchased (including MAN, DAIMLER, IVECO, VOLVO, RENAULT and DAF).
